My happy place. It was clean and well-kept and certainly a happy place for me to be. I had looked forward to being in this place ever since Walt Disney talked about it on his Wednesday night Disneyland TV show. Finally in 1955 the theme park opened to the general public. But what was noticedContinue reading “Mr. Disney, we need you back here on Earth.”

She was the opening act.
Oklahoma’s own. A good friend of ours who lived in Rush Springs, Oklahoma (the watermelon capitol of the world) had a musical talent. As a teenager back in the early 1950s Barbera was somewhat talented playing the accordion. Rush Springs had an annual watermelon and music festival and the young teenage Barbera was chosen toContinue reading “She was the opening act.”
A song request amigo.
Three Amigos. 1979. Many of our trips to Southern California we would often meet up with my cousin and his wife along with my wife and 9-year-old daughter. Meeting them for a spicy Mexican dinner. Sometimes my brother and his wife and maybe my cousins brother came along as well. We would often gather atContinue reading “A song request amigo.”
Some say I look like Alfred E Newman.
Who did I look like? My senior year 1962 and only eighteen years old. Standing in a bank teller line behind a petite woman with a pixie hair cut wearing black leotards and body tights she kept turning around and looking up at me with her round child-like face. Was I standing too close toContinue reading “Some say I look like Alfred E Newman.”
Put duct tape over her mouth.
Play Lobamba When wife and I lived in Sacramento, California we sometimes drove east on US-50 up to Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada mountains. We drove up to the adjacent town of ‘Stateline.’ Stateline is where the big casinos and it’s numerous entertainment venues were on the Nevada side of the California/Nevada border. WeContinue reading “Put duct tape over her mouth.”
Why, we can do that.
Saturday movie matinee. The black and white photos on the Now Playing theater play bill poster out front were of Tom Mix movie star, trick rider, and sharp shooter. The first cowboy silent movie star filmed long before John Wayne appeared on the screen. The year was 1927 and Two brothers came out of theContinue reading “Why, we can do that.”
Listening to midnight radio.
All from my little AM radio. Back in 1951 and before our first TV and I Love Lucy, I was a frequent radio listener. We were living in Los Angeles and we had a Sears AM radio/record player console in our tiny Livingroom. A big wooden mahogany box that stood up and about the sameContinue reading “Listening to midnight radio.”
Book Report: I thought they fired him.
Book Report After he left the Saturday evening public radio show under a fog of impropriety, Garrison Kiellor really never went away. Still writing his brand of small town prairie humor and taking his show on the road. We noticed his coming appearance on the Brady theater in Tulsa a year or so ago. NeverContinue reading “Book Report: I thought they fired him.”
Write me a contract like that.
Beverly Hills 1971. I was working the credit department of a fashionable department store at the corner of Wilshire and Fairfax. A professional appearing gentleman wearing a nice tailored suit came to me at the credit desk and said he was turned down for a store credit card. So, I asked him to fill inContinue reading “Write me a contract like that.”
It was the organ that made me skate.
The marvelous Wurlitzer organ. Some of the older and larger downtown movie theaters had a mighty Wurlitzer organ. Put into service back when movies were silent and needed some underlying musical theme to carry the action. The bigger and older ones were huge as they are today. About the size of a Volkswagen beetle. AContinue reading “It was the organ that made me skate.”
